Today Julie, Dylan and I spent the afternoon in Washington at the Armed Forces Retirement Center cheering on my Brother as he raced through the woods for the 2014 DC Cycle Cross in hopes of a top 3 finish and a medal. Even with a great start, he would not be on the podium this year as one to many wrecks would push him back to around 10 place in the standings, but Dylan, riding in his second kids cycle cross race would bring home a medal. We were all very proud of both the family cycle racers!

09/16/2014 – “Dylan enjoying a day at the kids pool” – Tucker’s Point Beach Club
As promised, here are a couple of home movies from our recent trip to Bermuda with the grand parents. I’ve started to do a lot more video on our trips now that I have a newer more powerful video editing software at my disposal. I also plan to create a new platform on my website for showing off my videos in my travel/dive trip section… more on that later.

“Ray and Barbara outside The Point Restaurant before dinner” – Tucker’s Point Hotel & Spa, Bermuda.
Here are some more photos from our annual end of summer family trip to Bermuda. I have to thank my father for taking and sharing a lot of the photos in this post… it’s hard to take photos of your son and be in them at the same time! Thanks again Dad and I hope you and Mom, as well as Bruce and Ann, had a wonderful time staying with us for the week. Hope we can do it again soon!!

“Looking out over Tucker’s Point private beach” – Tucker’s Point Beach Club, Bermuda.
We changed things up a little for our annual end of summer Bermuda trip this year. My parents, even they travel a lot, have never been to Bermuda, so Julie and I thought it would be nice to have them accompany us and Dylan for a week of fun in the sun. What made this trip even better was having Julie’s parents there at the same time so Dylan could enjoy all the grand parents at once. I think everyone had a very nice time and the grand parents got to enjoy some very special quality time with their favorite grand son… Dylan.

The Bunratty Castle & Folk Park – Bunratty, County Clare, Ireland
After leaving Ashford Castle we traveled South with the rest of the Bedford Clan to County Clare, where we would spend one night at Bunratty Castle Hotel before driving back to Dublin for our flight home. We had a chance to tour the old castle before it closed and then enjoyed a traditional Irish medieval dinner at the Bunratty Castle Estates. There was great food, entertainment and even some traditional Irish dancing to round out the evening. I will try to post a couple of videos later when I have time to edit them.

Bruce and Ann Bedford renewing their wedding vows in Ireland – Ashford Castle Gardens
The primary purpose for our visit to Ireland and Ashford Castle was to witness and partake in the celebration of my wife’s parents 50th wedding anniversary. For this historic event my mother-in-law requested that they renew their vows in the Rose Garden of Ashford Castle… so it would be! The whole Bedford family including the kids, grand kids and even Aunt Bonnie were on hand for the ceremony. My brother-in-law Jason, who is much better with words, would be the one to do the honers (so to speak!)
I got to walk Granny Ann down the path for the second time and then did my best to document the entire event in photos. It was a very nice ceremony and a perfect place to have it! Afterwords we hustled back to the Castle for a lavish dinner in the main dinning room to be followed by a surprise wedding cake courtesy of the Ashford Castle staff. As you will see in the photos… everyone had a great time!

Me and my new hunting buddy ‘Wilde’ – Ireland’s School of Falconry, Ashford Castle
One of the activities that we wanted to try while staying at Ashford Castle was to spend a half day at Ireland’s School of Falconry and learn about hunting with falcons and hawks. After a shout tour of the facility and a crash course on Falconry, we were introduced to a couple of Harris Hawks named Swift and Wilde who we would be flying this morning for our Hawk-Walk around the grounds of the castle. We took turns flying the hawks with several other members of the family as we hiked down secluded trails in the forest. As you can see from the photos we had a blast. This was an outstanding activity and I would highly recommend it for anyone visiting Ashford Castle.

The Kylemore Castle (built in 1870 for Mitchell Henry of London) – Connemara, County Galway, Ireland
Today we, meaning the entire Bedford Clan, decided to do a little sightseeing of the western side of the country. So after inquiring with the concierge at the castle, we were lined up with a very nice older gentleman who had his own tour bus and sightseeing business. We gave him a couple of places we thought we would like to see and then he put together a full days outing which would have us cover a huge area of western Ireland.
We traveled over the mountains through the beautiful Connemara National Park and as far north as Leenaun (I think… no cell service!) We tip-toed through the Peat Bogs and also had a nice lunch at The Kylemore Abbey Castle. We drove out Sky Road through Kingstown to one of the western most points to a beautiful scenic overlook of the Atlantic Ocean and then down through Clifden. It was a very long day, but we felt we had seen a lot of the country by the time we got back to Ashford Castle.

The Award Winning 5 Star Ashford Castle Hotel – Cong, Co. Mayo, Ireland
After spending a few fun filled days in Dublin it was time to move on to phase three of our trip. For this we would rent cars (for Julie’s sisters family and ours) and drive across the Republic Of Ireland to the West where we would meet up with the rest of the Bedford Clan at Ashford Castle just outside of Cong on the Mayo-Galway border. We would spend a week here at the castle and do as much sightseeing of western Ireland as possible. The castle was originally built in 1228 by the Anglo-Norman House of Burke and over looks the Lough Corrib lake. The castle and its property has changed hands many times over the centuries and at one time was even owned by Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness of the Guinness Family.

Touring one of the most famous brewery’s in the world! – Guinness – St. James Gate Brewery
After spending several days sightseeing and living it up in London, we were ready to start the second phase of our summer family trip which would land us in Dublin, Ireland. Another beautiful city with lots of culture and awesome friendly people. We would only be here for a few days before starting our road trip to the west and Ashford Castle, so we tried to fit as much in as we could. For accommodations, we stayed at the Merrion Hotel in the heart of the city and therefor had to make reservations at the world famous Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud. We had a fantastic time in Dublin and to top it off I was able to celebrate my birthday with a huge seafood feast… I would pay for that later!!
