One of our favorite local community events is the annual Armed Forces Cycling Classic in Arlington, VA. The event refers to a weekend of road bicycle racing events held annually in June just down the street from where we live. The weekend consists of several amateur events, including kids races which Dylan and his friends race in, and two professional races in the criterium format, the Clarendon Cup and the Crystal City Cup. The Clarendon Cup Men’s Pro race is always right after the kids races and we try to stick around and cheer them on. My brother is a big cycle-cross racer, so he knows lots of people and racers in the pro road bicycling circuit. Here are some photos from this years kids race events.
‘Dylan and his friend in the staging area for the AFCC kids race’ – Air Force Cycling Classic, Arlington, VA
Every year the Air Force Cycling Classic comes to Arlington, Virginia and every year my son puts it on top of his list of things to do. Personally I think the main reason he likes the event is because his good friend from across the street does it, but regardless I happy that he chooses to ride in the kids race. This year he will be racing an a new Redline road racing bicycle that was a birthday present from his Uncle Mike… I’m not sure it will make him faster, but it sure is a cool bike. I’ll post a video of the race later when I get a chance.
06/12/2016 – “Dylan’s kids race at this years Air Force Cycling Classic” – Arlington, VA.
As promised in one of my earlier posts, I did find some video footage from Dylan’s full track bike race at the Air Force Association Cycling Classic here in Clarendon. Again, my small camera doesn’t create the best HD video, but it does a fair job for it’s size. Enjoy!!
“Dylan and Uncle Mike after a nice bike ride” – Arlington, VA.
I always like to add a post every year with more current photos of Dylan’s biking skills. He’s turning out to be as comfortable on two wheels as my brother and I were as kids. It scares me a little to know that one day he will move up to motorcycles as we did and have to worry about sharing the road with distracted drivers. Everyone knows that the drivers in this area have no respect for cyclists of any kind. Be safe my son!!
Note: Dylan also did very well in the Air Force Cycling Classic kids race this year in Clarendon. There where several local cycling magazine photographers and community paper reporters there covering the race who asked permission to use Dylan’s picture in their publications. He is a super photogenic kid!! (View Photos, Slideshows, Videos & More»)
Today Julie, Dylan and I spent the afternoon in Washington at the Armed Forces Retirement Center cheering on my Brother as he raced through the woods for the 2014 DC Cycle Cross in hopes of a top 3 finish and a medal. Even with a great start, he would not be on the podium this year as one to many wrecks would push him back to around 10 place in the standings, but Dylan, riding in his second kids cycle cross race would bring home a medal. We were all very proud of both the family cycle racers! (View Photos, Slideshows, Videos & More»)
My brother Mike on the podium after taking third in his event – DCCX 2013 – Washington, DC
Here are some of the photos taken at this years DCCX Cycle Cross event at the Armed Forces Retirement Center in Washington, DC. One of the highlights of the day was my brother, Mike Vanderbilt, taking third place in his event… Congrats Bro!! Dylan also had a race of his own and while he didn’t do so well, he still took home a medal. It was a great day to be outside with friends and family!
10/21/2012 – The DC Cyclocross Event at the AFRH – Washington, DC
Here is a little video I spliced together of last years DC Cyclocross event that my brother Mike raced in. You will see him a lot in the three minute video… he is wearing the Team V-Day cycling logo’s. It was so windy that day that the soundtrack was pretty bad, so I add a music soundtrack that I might pump this video up a bit… enjoy!!
Mike Vanderbilt of ‘Team V-Day’ tearing it up at the DC Cyclecross – Washington, DC
Here are a couple of photos from my brother’s race at the DC Cyclecross which took place on the grounds of the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington, DC. I wish I had remembered to bring my DSLR camera for this event, but I was glad I had my little Sony DSC-H55 pocket camera… there would have been no chance at all of catching the action with a cellphone camera! Dylan really enjoyed watching Uncle Mike ride in the race, so I’ll have to remember to bring the Nikon next time…! (View Photos, Slideshows, Videos & More»)
