2019 Air Force Cycling Classic

:: Tags: Biking, Cycling, Dylan, Family, Friends

One of our favorite local community events is the annual Armed Forces Cycling Classic in Arlington, VA. The event refers to a weekend of road bicycle racing events held annually in June just down the street from where we live. The weekend consists of several amateur events, including kids races which Dylan and his friends race in, and two professional races in the criterium format, the Clarendon Cup and the Crystal City Cup. The Clarendon Cup Men’s Pro race is always right after the kids races and we try to stick around and cheer them on. My brother is a big cycle-cross racer, so he knows lots of people and racers in the pro road bicycling circuit. Here are some photos from this years kids race events.

‘Dylan all decked out for our neighborhood July 4th Parade’ – Arlington, VA.

As we all know, Julie and Dylan are always up for decorating when it comes to a holiday… and the July 4th holiday celebration is one that we all enjoy! Here are some photos form our neighborhood July 4th Parade that our local Arlington fire station puts together every year. Dylan likes to ride his bike in the parade with his friends, so we try to get there early enough that he can get up on the front row for the start.

“Dylan and Uncle Mike after a nice bike ride” – Arlington, VA.

I always like to add a post every year with more current photos of Dylan’s biking skills. He’s turning out to be as comfortable on two wheels as my brother and I were as kids. It scares me a little to know that one day he will move up to motorcycles as we did and have to worry about sharing the road with distracted drivers. Everyone knows that the drivers in this area have no respect for cyclists of any kind. Be safe my son!!

Note: Dylan also did very well in the Air Force Cycling Classic kids race this year in Clarendon. There where several local cycling magazine photographers and community paper reporters there covering the race who asked permission to use Dylan’s picture in their publications. He is a super photogenic kid!!

Dylan and his orange 16″ Custom Mongoose Duster bike – Arlington, VA.

We sent Dylan to a local biking camp this summer as one of his summer activities and he totally loved it. We started Dylan out on a push/balance bike when he was very young, so the transition to a peddle bike last year was very quick and easy. He didn’t want training wheels at all during the transition, stating that they only got in the way. This spring we put him on one size larger peddle bike and he has turned out to be an outstanding rider for a five year old. As a matter of fact, the very first day of his two week biking camp, the director moved him from the beginners class to the advanced class with the bigger kids and told us he was way too good to be in his age level group. That same day he and his new class went on a group ride from Arlington to DC (about 6 to 7 miles round trip!) Since then we have taken him on bike rides of over 10 miles. This boy loves to bike!! Here are some photos of this summers biking fun.

Dylan’s Biking Video!

08/05/2014 – “Dylan making the switch from push-bike to peddle bike” (Arlington, VA.)

Well all I can say is that my son must take after my brother… “anything and everything on two wheels!” He went from a push bike last fall (which he mastered!) to a peddle bike this spring and made the transition without having to use training wheels at all! He actually told us that training wheels would only make him crash… So with a little encouragement and some help from my brother he is officially riding a peddle bike at a little over 5 years old!
