Dylan manning the rudder of the ‘Godspeed‘ – Historic Ship Museum, Jamestown, VA.
For this years annual family retreat and vacation we wanted to take in a little American history, so we decided to do the tourist thing in Colonial Williamsburg and Historic Jamestown Virginia. I visited this historic town years ago with my family when I was just a child and I thought it would be a nice way to introduce Dylan to some of our country’s early history. I’m not a history buff by nature, but I do enjoy going back in time, so to speak, and remembering the things my high school history teacher us to try to implant into my brain about this early period in American history. Seeing how well everything has been preserved and the attention to detail in the way the tours are run really make you proud to be in such a historic place.
Aside from doing the normal tourist thing and walking for miles through all the little shops and houses, we also spent an evening having a traditional Colonial-style dinner at the King’s Arms Tavern in the historic colony. They do a great job of putting on a show for the patrons and the food is excellent. Every detail, from the early 18th-century building and old original wooden floors to the servers in traditional colonial costumes, truly makes you feel as though you have traveled back in time for the evening. Jamestown was also a lot of fun except for the part where Dylan got attacked by a rouge roster at the old fort. Thankfully I was close by and was able to grab it and kick it away before it had a chance to hurt him.

“M/V ‘Our Pleasure’ anchored close to the shoreline” – Wades Bay, Nanjemoy, MD.
All summer we’ve been talking about making a run down river to an area where the water is a little cleaner and the ‘Hydrilla’ doesn’t grow as thick as it does in Belmont Bay. Our boating friends Charlie and Nichole made a day trip down river a couple of weeks ago and they said that Wades Bay was totally Hydrilla free and the deep water would allow for a near shore line anchorage. So this weekend we decided to make the hour long boat ride down river for some different scenery and shark tooth hunting at Wades Bay. We asked Mike and Melissa to join us for the day and they excepted making it an even more enjoyable outing. The water was a little bit on the cool side, but the weather held and it turned out to be a great day. Can’t wait to do it again next summer!

“Finally a beautiful sunny day to enjoy some snorkeling” – Castle Island, Bermuda
The second half of our week was also mixed as far as the weather went, but we made the best of it and spent one of the rainy days sightseeing with Carlyta at the Crystal Caves. We did have some good days hanging out at the pools drinking margaritas and watching the sun poke in and out of the clouds. I really don’t think anyone would have complained too much about the situation at hand, especially seeing it from our point of view.
On our last day, the wind finally died down and we where able to rent a boat and head over to Castle Island beach for some snorkeling. Carlyta told us she had never been snorkeling before and this would be one activity she would really like to try, so I’m happy the weather laid back enough for us to make it happen. Dylan has also become quite the little ‘Aquaman’ over the summer and he showed his skills on an hour long swim snorkeling around Castle Island reef. I’ll add another post later on with more photos and even some video from our snorkeling adventure to Castle Island.

“Dylan and I fishing just east of Eagle Nest Lodge” – Eagle Nest Lake, Manitoba, CA.
My father in law, Bruce, has been talking about setting up a ‘guys only’ fishing trip for some time now. We had discussed possibly making it an offshore sport fishing trip, but my brother in law Jason, who is not a big fan of boats, suggested that we book a trip with a fishing camp up in Canada. After some research, Jason and Bruce decided on a place called Eagle Nest Lodge located northeast of Winnipeg. The logistics of the trip would turn out to be somewhat complicated, but we managed to put all the pieces together and make it work. The family members coming from the United States which would include Bruce, Myself, Dylan and my brother Mike, would have to take three flights and a long van ride to get to our final destination. The last leg of the trip would be a 60 minute Float Plane flight to get to the Lodge which is located on the Winnipeg River at Eagle Nest Lake.
The Canadian side of the family meet us in Winnipeg where we spent the first night after having a nice dinner at one of the local steak houses. The next morning, after a hardy breakfast, we did a little sightseeing around Winnipeg before meeting up with our shuttle driver, who would drive us up to Lac du Bonnet, MB., where we would catch our float plane flight to the lodge. After landing at the lodge, we had a quick orientation meeting along with some beer and shrimp cocktails and then we were showed to our cabin where we unpacked and got ready for dinner. After dinner, which was excellent I might add, we made our way to the docks where we meet our fishing guides and then off we went for our first evening of fishing. The sun doesn’t set until after 9 pm this far north this time of year, so we fished until the sun went down! Bruce was the big winner of our first evening of fishing after landing a 34″ Pike!

06/20/2016 – “Dylan spending some time at the pools” – Tucker’s Point, Bermuda
Here are a couple of home movies I’ve put together from our recent trip to Tucker’s Point Club in Bermuda. A lot of the footage in these movies was shot with my wife’s waterproof camera. “Dylan riding a canon into battle” – Royal Navel Dockyards, Bermuda, HS.
We have at least five trips planned for this year and our first big one is always our annual spring Bermuda trip. We decided again this year to wait until late June when Dylan was out of school before making our first trip. Closer to summer means that the water will be warmer. It could have been a better week weather wise, but we made due with what mother nature gave us. This year we invited my brother Mike and his girlfriend Melissa to join us for the week! They had some scheduling conflicts, but were able to fly in and join us for five days.
We had a great week of sight seeing, boating, snorkeling, a nice dinner out, and tons of fun at the beach club and swimming pools. I didn’t get to play any golf this trip, but we did make it down to the Royal Navel Dockyards for lunch and some great shopping. Dylan is getting so much better with his swimming that I think next year he wont need a life jacket at all while snorkeling in open water! We look forward to taking Uncle Mike and Melissa back to Bermuda with us again in the future… we all had so much fun together and Dylan loves the extra attention!

“Enjoying Amtrak’s Business Class on the Northeastern line to New York City” – New York, NY.
For this years spring trip to New York City, Julie and I decided to take the train instead of flying. Just the lowered stress level alone of traveling by train rather than fighting lines in the airport made this trip so much nicer. I thing we will take the train from now on when traveling to New York. One sad note… Penn Station is still a shit hole! Why can’t the city officials get their act’s together and remodel or at least try to clean that place up?! Washington, DC did a fantastic job remodeling and modernizing Union Station!

“A family photo on Mother’s Day 2016” – The Cosmos Club, Washington, DC.
This year for Mother’s Day, Julies father Bruce, came up with the fantastic idea to take everyone to brunch downtown at the very exclusive Cosmos Club. Bruce, being a member of the Yale Club, gets special VIP privileges at two dozen or so other exclusive private clubs around the world. So, with both sets of grandparents in town for Mother’s Day we decided to dress up and go enjoy a top notch meal in a fabulous venue with three wonderful mothers!! “The Cosmos Club, located in Washington, D.C., was founded by John Wesley Powell in 1878. It is a private social club for men and women distinguished in science, literature and the arts or public service. Members come from virtually every profession that has anything to do with scholarship, creative genius or intellectual distinction.”
