RS Falcon Class Fair

:: Tags: Dylan, Project, School

As part of the 3rd grade curriculum for the River School, all the students in the Falcon Class have to come up with a project for the School Fair. Dylan’s class has been studying the time period of Ancient Rome and for his project he decided to research and write a report on ancient Roman games and toys. Along with a thorough report, Dylan made a model of a toy ball with beads inside of it, much like the ones the children of ancient Rome use to play with.

River School Science Fair

One of the things that every student of the graduating Falcon Class at the River School has to participate in is the 3rd Grade Science Fair. Dylan’s science fair project was about the different types of fidgets that kids use to help them focus in the school classroom environment. He did an awesome job of researching his topic, running his own trials on real subjects and then coming up with a hypothesis… and he did this all on his own at school! We are so proud of his work and how well he is doing both socially and academically at the River School. Keep up the great work Dylan!

BSA NCAC Service Project

This year our family has become even more involved in Cub Scouts than previously would have expected. The recent shake up in leadership left the Pack without several key members due to the older Scouts and families moving on to Boy Scouts. With that, I found myself being talked into volunteering again… this time as the senior Webelos Den Leader. Since my son Dylan was a Webelo this year, it was nice to be able to lead his den and teach all the boys about the outdoors. Scouting at the Webelos level is a lot of fun and the adventures are more geared towards outdoors, camping, cooking and outdoor survival… all of my favorite things.

Being a Scout leader also requires you to gather the boys and encourage them to volunteer for service projects around the community. This year, with a Webelos Den of 13 boys, I had my hands full, but always found time to help out with Pack events. One of our service projects for the year was to help out at the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, DC during the BSA NCAC National Mall Project. We had a great total pack turnout and at least half of my Webelos Scouts showed up to help with the Mall Project

Dylan’s First Pinewood Derby

:: Tags: Dylan, Project, Scouting

I never thought I would ever be working on another BSA Pinewood Derby car ever, but yet here I am designing and making a new car for my son to race in his very first pinewood derby. I must admit, I’m a bit rusty on the woodworking side of things especially when it comes to small scale projects, but I do have the tools and the time. I did make Dylan work with me on this project as much as his attention span could handle. Dylan picked out the design and helped with the sanding, painting and final assemble. It turned out to be a really nice car, just not the fastest car on the track. However, he did win an award for ‘best Race Car’ design for the pack. Great job Dylan!
