Dusty Lee Has Past Away – Springfield, VA

Sir Dusty Lee Vanderbilt
My Very Best Friend, Dusty Lee – We’ll Miss You Greatly!!!

Dusty Lee has been more than just my dog for the past twelve and a half years, he has been my best friend, loyal companion & one of the smartest and kindest pets I have ever owned! He past away at home of natural causes in the middle of the night. As some of you know, I lost my other dog Casey earlier this year to cancer. Casey and Dusty were like brother & sister to one another; Truly two peas in a pod! I think Dusty took it pretty hard when we lost Casey but he seemed to snap back quite well after several weeks.

It’s hard writing this, even now, almost two weeks after Dusty’s passing. Going home to a empty house after becoming a custom to being greeted every night with the unconditional love of your pet & best friend is very hard. I think of him all the time and will miss him for a very long time to come! I have posted this along with a photo slideshow as a tribute to my dog and very best friend – Dusty Lee!!

Our Wedding Celebration - St. Michaels, MD
Doug & Julie’s Wedding Celebration – Photo by: Erwin Thamm

I’m not going to go into a huge write up about the wedding… I will just say that it was Phenomenal!!! Julie and I can not thank our friends and family enough for making this day on of the most memorable days of our lives! We would like to thank all of our venders for the outstanding service and the personal touch that made this event a huge success with all of our guests!

Julie and I would also like to thank everyone who took pictures at the wedding and sent them into have me post them on my Web site. A big thank you goes out to our friend Erwin for the great pictures he took during the celebration… I would have been taking pictures too, but I would have looked a little funny with a big Nikon camera hanging around my neck during the ceremony.

Doug & the boys at Whitlow’s - Arlington
Me and the Boys – Hanging loose at Whitlow’s in Arlington

First of all I would like to thank all my friends for coming out and celebrating we me on this historic occasion! It really means a lot to me to know that you care… and the free beer helped a lot too!! Secondly I would like to thank all of you who shot me in the back with paint balls while I was on the ground, out of ammo (yea Mike, that includes you Bro!) The welts still haven’t gone away and I think I might have broken a finger when I jumped behind that building!! Just kidding (about the finger that is.)

It was a great time and yes, we will have to get together and go out to PEV’s again soon for some more paint ball punishment. I’m putting together a little photo slideshow of the weekend events for your entertainment. We have to thank ‘Elmo’ for bringing a camera on Friday night… too bad no one thought to bring one out to PEV’s on Saturday. That would have made for some nice artwork!!

The 4th Of July Weekend – Washington, DC

DC Fireworks-2007
Boating with friends on the Potomac River – waiting for the DC fireworks

When I was younger I use to boat on the Potomac River almost every weekend during the summers. It wasn’t until several years ago when I reconnected with a good friend of mine from high school that I realized how much I truly missed having a boat of my own. Chris and I started hanging out again after catching up at our 20 year reunion in 2004. I didn’t know it at the time, but he was really into power boating and takes his wife and kids out on the Potomac just about every chance he gets.

He invited me out a couple of times and low and behold it has become a weekend habit again (when time permits of course). I find it truly relaxing to be on the water no matter where it is and boating has always been in my blood, so when he invited Julie and myself to go out for the Fourth Of July I couldn’t say no!! I decided to bring my camera along and see what kind of photos I could get from a rocking boat in the middle of the night… take a look, you might be surprised at how well they turned out… ;-)!!

Sony DSC-F707 5.24mp/Ikelite Underwater Camera System – $1500

This system includes everything needed to start taking great underwater photographs… an excellent starter system for anyone looking to get into underwater photography! Please email me for complete details.

Minolta Maxxum 3xi 35mm SLR w/35-80 zoom lens & extras – $60

This is an older 35mm film camera system which only collects dust in a closet. It still works great, but I have absolutly no use for it anymore. System comes with the Minolta SLR camera body, Minolta 35-80 AF power zoom lens, Minolta 2000xi Flash, Minolta camera bag & neck strap. Make me an offer and it’s yours!

Bauer Supreme 3000 Pro Ice Hockey Gloves (m/m size-14) – $60

I used these hockey gloves for 1 season in Prince William on a ‘B’ division team before purching a pair of Easton Gloves. They are in almost new condition with only a small amount of tape ware to the palms.

95′ Kawasaki ZX7R Fiberglass Solo-Tail (new-unfinished) – $120

This is a new custom fiberglass solo-tail for a 95′ Kawasaki ZX7R sportbike. I was going to use it myself, but I ended up selling my bike before I had a chance to start the custom body & paint work. It’s un-cut and un-painted… just waiting for a new owner. Make me a reasonable offer and it’s yours!

Stay tuned… more to follow!

Francis and Jill’s Wedding – Virginia Beach, VA

The Dirren Wedding

It seems that 2007 is going to be a busy year for weddings. Not only are Julie and I taking the plunge but several of our friends are also venturing into this thing called marriage. This weekend we are in Virginia Beach to support two of our closest friends Francis and Jill, who are having their wedding at Francis’ parents place. It is a very nice setting for a wedding (on the water with lots of trees and big tents)… It should be a great show!!

I normally don’t shoot weddings… some people have a real knack for taking pictures of people all dressed up and others (like myself) are more inclined to be shooting fish or large marine animals who smile at you all the time! This time I made an exception and brought my camera along just for kicks. I was really surprised how nice the photos I took turned out… I didn’t really think I would shoot many pictures so I didn’t bring a large zoom, just my 12-24 mm Nikkor wide angle lens (I will know better next time).

After I posted some of the photos online I received emails from friends commenting on how nice they turned out and asking how they could get prints… so I put together a DVD of all the image files and gave it to Francis and Jill as one of their wedding presents from Julie and myself. They Loved It… at least that’s what they told me ;-)!!

I am going to shoot two more weddings later this year… stay tuned!!

You can now browse the photos & buy prints online here»

The Oaks Waterfront Inn - Royal Oak, MD

This weekend Julie and I made the trip up to St. Michaels Maryland to finalize our wedding plans. The trip consisted of food and wine tasting at The Oaks Waterfront Inn, flower and wedding color selections, a trip to the court house for our marriage licence and don’t forget the best part… the cake tasting!!

We would like to thank Julie’s parents and her sister Susan for being there and helping out with the selection process and other events… it really means a lot to us!!

Julie & Doug / Engaged For New Years!

Doug and Julie
Doug & Julie on New Years Eve 2006

Julie and I have been kicking the idea of marriage around for a while now, but I really wanted to make sure she was okay with it before I popped the question. I guess you could say I kind of set her up… I didn’t do it on purpose, it just kind of worked out that way. For the past month I have been throwing the idea at her that we should get engaged but I kept telling her that I would have to ask her at just the right time and in just the right setting. For some reason she started thinking that New Years Eve would be that place and time; maybe I hinted around in that general direction a little but I never actually told her that!!

Anyway, I was planning on taking Julie out on New Years Eve for a nice dinner, some wine and maybe a little dancing… you know, just the two of us. Well, it turned out that Julie invited another couple (friends of ours) to join us for the evening at the Old Anglers Inn Restaurant in Maryland… I really didn’t think anything of it at the time, after all, we have gone out to dinner with Christina and Tom before and always had a great time so I knew this time would be no different.

The evening went very well and all parties had a great time… the one thing that none of us new was that the restaurant closed before mid-night, so there would be no watching the ball drop from the dance floor not to mention they didn’t even have a dance floor!! So in trying to keep this short I will just get to the punch line… I didn’t realize that Julie was expecting me to pop the question sometime during the evening… so I didn’t!!

Boy, did I get an ear full the next morning!! It all worked out anyway… I popped the question while she was crying and confronting me first thing in the morning (that was fun). Then I had to put up with her crying after I asked her too. Well at least I didn’t have to see her get all emotional while we were at dinner… that could have been very ugly!

We will be posting some photo galleries of the pre-wedding festivities… so stay tuned!!

Annual Oyster Festival – St. Michaels

:: Tags: Food, Travel

oysterfest_05-2.JPG

This is a event that Julie and I are going to make a habit! Not only do we get to pig out on some of the finest oysters that the Chesapeake Bay has to offer, but we also get a chance to visit with her parents who spend their winters in the St. Michaels, Maryland area. Thanks again for having the two of us up for the weekend…we had a really great time!
