The other day I was having a conversation with someone at work and I mentioned that I was getting a new server for 2008 and their reply was “wow…I didn’t know you had a butler. How much does that cost you a month!?” I almost started to laugh and then I realized that this person was kind of serious. After I explained what I was refering to, they said “Oh yeah, I knew that… I was just trying to get your goat!” Ha… You can have the goat… I like beef!

I started putting together a new Web Server about a week ago to host all of my Web sites and any future hosting jobs I might aquire. It was at first a request of my brothers to try and free up some space on the other servers, but it soon proved to be a needful change. I will be able to run more applications and server-sides having my own dedicated machine.

Doug’s computer & photography workshop (aka ‘The Man Room’)

The building process is the easy part… after all, a Web server is really nothing more than a desktop computer that runs a different operating system and software applications. The hard part is the programming and setup of the server. I will be the first one to admit that I am not a programmer! So, for that part I had to inlist the help of my brothers head administrative technician (after hours and on the weekends, of course) to setup the OS, firewall and other apps and then give the box a good kick start! Thanks Glenn for all the Help!!!

A view for those who have never removed the cover.

There will be more to follow once things are up and running. I don’t expect for there to be any down time during the server switch over, and if there is it shouldn’t last more than an hour. Check back later for more updates!

More to follow…»

You would, think that in this day and age, a person would know what you mean when you use the word ‘server’.
